Winter base training – run like a kid

Tyler runs the Frederick Watershed trails

One of the best parts of coaching is how much I learn from athletes. Conversations bring reminders of ideas once forgotten and generate new ideas. One recent discussion reminded me not to worry about creating lots of variety during the winter base training period. Every athlete is a little different but at its core, base training is about easy runs that increase endurance, strengthen connective tissue, and develop slow-twitch muscle fibers while minimizing injury risk. Incorporate some strides during some of these easy runs, increase strength training to resolve any imbalances or weaknesses, add some cross-training if possible, and you’ve got a good recipe for a strong spring/summer racing season.

And with no races to think about, it’s a great opportunity to tune into your running. Leave your watch behind (or put it in your pocket ), explore some new trails, and run like a kid 🙂
